The number one thing that you should know about raccoons damaging your home is “Will my insurance company cover the damage?”  In most cases the answer is YES.  Raccoons are not considered to be rodents and therefore depending on your policy, (each one is very different) should be covered under your homeowners insurance.  Each company and policy has its own rules and regulations in regards to what they will and will not cover.  My advice to you would be to check your policy and find out if it specifically indicates that animal damage isn’t covered.  If you have questions concerning your policy its best to first call your agent.  If you’re not satisfied with their answers talk to one of our technicians to assist you through this process.

If your agent tells you that raccoon damage isn’t covered your next step is to ask them to show you in your policy where this information can be found, remember raccoons are not considered to be rodents.  When in doubt call Advanced Wildlife Controls general manager to help with all insurance questions.

What’s typically covered in my homeowners insurance?
Usually our initial service fee, the removal of the raccoons, and the closing of the entry point (s) are all covered under your policy.  Additionally, in some cases raccoons have damaged attic insulation and the removal of the insulation is required.  This process along with the re-installation of new insulation is typically covered as well.  Please note that most policies have at least a $1,000.00 deductible and will not always be beneficial to each situation. Our technicians will be able to advise you on if it is beneficial to make a claim.  Please remember that to have an adjuster out to assess the area will not cost you any money.  Our general manager PJ Winkelmann can assist most customers in these areas and has personally worked with most insurance agencies in southeastern Wisconsin.

What about preventive measures, are they covered?
In most cases preventive measures aren’t covered.  Although some companies will pay for chimney caps if it’s determined that the raccoons accessed those areas at some point.  If you’re insurance company covers preventative measures than you have a great company and shouldn’t ever switch.

Will my insurance company drop me if I make a claim?
The good ones won’t, but we have seen it happen!  They pay the claim and then kick you to the curb. However, don’t let that stop you from making a claim.

What is the best insurance company for you to deal with?
My favorite company to deal with in all claim situations has been West Bend Mutual Insurance.  Their adjusters are great to work with and ultimately do a great job of working with the customers!
